Advantages:
- Good image quality at low data rates
Disadvantages:
- Standard is still being designed
AVI (Audio-Video Interlaced)
Advantages:
- Choice of codecs mean you can achieve a high rate compression if you experiment
- Plays in mainstream media players such as Windows media player
- Can be used as a starting point to create playable DVDs
Disadvantages
- AVI format does not support user interactivity (e.g. ‘click to continue’ pauses)
- The codec to create your movie is usually required to be installed in order to view it
FLV (Flash Video)
Advantages:
- Files work on PCs, Macs, Linux
- AVI format does not support user interactivity (e.g. ‘click to continue’ pauses)
Disadvantages:
- Not being a common distribution format like Windows Media or Quicktime, you may often have to convert files from other formats to .flv. which takes time
- Initial difficulty – even the simplest flash installation is a little more complex than others
SWF (ShockWave Flash)
Advantages:
- Vector based so graphics are easily scaled
- Fast loading with easy and smooth compression
Disadvantages:
- Compatibility – SWF videos can only be played if Macromedia Flash is installed on the computer
MOV
Advantages:
- Easily editable
- Used in PCs and Macs
Disadvantages
- Mostly interchangeable within a QuickTime-only environment
