Survey and Question Encryption

An additional layer of security can be applied to surveys so that responses can only be viewed/export by the person that has the key. Any individual without the key will not be able to view encrypted questions even if they export the responses. This exclusion also includes Concep support so additional care is needed when handling the key.

The key is obtained when the first question on a survey is encrypted. It is only downloaded once and cannot be received if lost or deleted.

Clicking show on the setting for a survey question will allow you to view addition options. In addition to setting the question to mandatory, you can now check the "Encrypt" option. Note that applying Encryption will limit actions, limit, scoring and "choose go to" features.  

Upon selecting "Encrypt" it will present a warning message before it is applied, it reads:

Enabling encryption for a question encrypts the response on the responder's computer before it is submitted.

Once submitted the responses can only be decrypted using a private key unique to this survey.

This ensures information contained in the responses is secure. Only users with access to the survey and private key can view the responses.

To enable encryption and generate a private key click the Enable Encryption button. You will be prompted to download the private key.

Warning: The private key can only be downloaded once, and if lost, there is no way to decrypt the responses. It should be stored in a safe location once downloaded.

Upon clicking the button that says "Enable Encryption" a file will be downloaded onto your computer, if you browser asks you to keep or discard please keep this file. This file is your key so do not lose it as there is no way to recover it, even by Concep Support. The name of the key will start with the name of the survey, for example - Survey - [Survey Name here] - Private Key.asc. If the file is not being downloaded onto your system please first contact your local IT support as the file type might be restricted. If it does download normally be sure to check your computers download folder.

Please keep in mind that each question needs to be manually checked for encryption which also gives you the option to pick and choose which questions have the additional layer of security. Note that it will only download the key the first time encryption is checked on the survey.
